DRAW CLUB

FOR ADULTS

Hello, I'm Mr Wade, and I teach our weekly Draw Club classes. I'm a professional cartoonist who creates cartoons for businesses. I've also been teaching kids and adults how to draw cartoons in schools, camps and workshops since 1990. My wife, Eva Marie, and I started an in-person Draw Club in 2013 here in Holland on the shores of Lake Michigan. Over the years, people have asked us for a weekly adult Draw Club, and now it's available, so let's have some fun drawing!

FAQ

Who can join Draw Club?

Anyone can join. From anywhere. You just need a reliable internet connection.

Are all Draw Club classes online?

Yes. We are currently only online. Drawing works well online, and almost feels like you're there in person.

Why are there two adult Draw Clubs?

Eventually we'll try to meet a number of drawing niches for adults. For now we're just offering two...one for young to middle aged adults, and one for a bit more seasoned adult.

How long is a Draw Club lesson?

55 minutes...but you can spend as much time as you'd like perfecting the basic drawing we do in class.

What if I can't make the live session?

Sometimes our time offerings just don't work for you. And sometimes other activities (night out, events, vacations) make it impossible to attend our live sessions for a while. When that happens, there is always the option of watching the recorded lesson on YouTube and doing the drawing exercise at your convenience. We post the video just after classes are finished for the week.

Can I skip all the live classes and just do the videos?

Certainly. We love having you in class, but over the years we've had a number of people who only do the lesson using our YouTube videos. The videos are left up for a couple of weeks after the live class, and then we take them down, so if you choose to do class this way, don't wait too long to finish each lesson.

What tools do I need to bring to class?

You will need to print a JPG template to follow along with the lesson. Other tools for this class are simple: a pencil, an eraser, colored pencils (preferably two or three of each color, like a light, medium, and dark green, etc), two or three black felt tip ink pens of different sizes (fine, medium, large), watercolors, a ruler, and once or twice we'll need a mirror (a selfie will do if you have a phone/tablet). A suggested supplies list is above. We'll let you know if we're going to experiment with other tools in time to purchase them. And while you can get as swanky as you want, you'll never need high-end art supplies to complete our lessons.

Is Draw Club accredited?

Nope. This is for personal development, for fun and for connection.

How many people are in a class?

Honestly, that varies. Sometimes it's very small. Other times it's very large. We don't have a limit on the number of kids in class, but we do have people to respond to everyone in chat, so even if you're drawing with hundreds of other amazing illustrators around the world, you'll be heard. If class sizes are too big for everyone to share their work, you can always show us during Office Hours, post your work on our Facebook page, or send us an email with a picture of your work, and we'll give you some honest and encouraging feedback.

Can I share Draw Club with others?

Absolutely! We want everyone who wants to draw here. If you know a person, group, living community or program that would love a live drawing class to take part in, we'd love to have you share Draw Club with them. You can send them our website address-

https://www.googenius.com/drawing/draw-club-main.html

or download this Draw Club Info Sheet and send it on.

When are office hours?

Office hours will be determined once class rosters are solidified.

Do I have to share my work?

No. We never force sharing. But we'd love to see your work and encourage you along on your drawing journey.

There are two of us drawing at home, do we have to pay for both?

No. One price covers your whole household for any single class. If you are getting together as a group with other adults that aren't in your family, then please use our Group option at checkout (you can have any number of adults attend together in the same place for one really low price). If you have four or more students who want to draw together, the Group option is a super bargain. We love it when you draw together.

Will this give me an art porfolio?

Though our classes won't make you a virtuoso artist, it will give you a wide ranging collection of your art, and likely some pieces you'll like to hang on the wall or give to someone. The goal of our classes is to teach techniques and styles, so every lesson may not turn out a masterpiece...but some will be awesome. If you keep your work in a folder, you'll be able to see your progression over time.

Does Draw Club have scholarships?

We do not currently offer in-house scholarships. As we grow we will be developing a scholarship program. In the meantime, we are happy to get certified by any arts support organizations in your area if you pass along their info to us. Or you could suggest to local organizations to host an adult Draw Club in your area.

What if the internet goes down?

It happens. Rarely, but it does. Draw Club has an automatic generator back-up, so if power goes down, we should be back up shortly. If the internet substation goes down, we can't fix that...but we'll still post the lesson for the week on YouTube. In the last four years, we've only had one day permanently interrupted by internet outage.

Are all Draw Club classes live?

No. Each month, three sessions are live, followed by a fourth, recorded session called the Studio Project.

What's a Studio Project?

A Studio Project is an exercise that brings the previous three weeks of techniques together into one lesson for students to develop on their own. This is a chance to branch out of the step-by-step tutorials and into your own creativity and imagination. Take as much time as you want or need. And, if you're lacking inspiration, the Studio Project always has a step-by-step option as well, so we never leave you without support.

Can we run a group Draw Club?

If you would like to run your own in-person Draw Club group using our lessons, you certainly can. You would need to purchase our Group option at check-out and then you are free to host as large group as you would like, either during our live time slots or by replaying the video at a convenient time for your group to meet.
